The official line when Gibson had marked factory seconds was that these guitars had a cosmetic flaw that didn't otherwise affect the playability or structural integrity of the instrument.Often the flaw was hard to find and if the guitar was stamped with the word "second" this was probably the most noticeable defect.The second designation pretty much becomes meaningless in a used guitar.
Gibson had another classification for some pulls, the "BGN" mark.These guitars had more serious problems and usually were not released for sale though I am aware of exceptions.In general BGN guitars should be avoided unless you are aware of just what necessary repairs have occurred.
