R6 --increases to 3.3k ohm
R63--Drop to 50K ohm
C5--Remove
C39--Increase to .1uf 630v
C28--remove
C33--Replace with .022uf cap 630v(Use a quality part here)
C6-- Replace with .047uf cap 630v (Use a quality part here)
C24--Replace with 330pf silver mica cap.
C18--Replace with .022uf cap 630v (Quality cap)
C41--Replace with .001 to .01 uf cap 630v (Use a quality cap)--The larger the value like .01 gives you more of a mid-range bump and less high end. (This amp has plenty of high end)
C3--Replace with .02 630V cap (Use quality cap)
P3 &P4 (red wires from standby switch)
--Cut both leads one inch from board, strip ends, tie together with solder, insulate.
Standby switch--- Take remaining ends of red wires and switch the connection of the bridge rectifier and ground. Cut the cathodes of diodes ( Not the silver band end) D8 & D11. Tie cathodes of D8 and D11 together with solder. Solder one red wire to diodes and solder the other to the top of the circuit board where the remaining portion of the cut diode leads are.
This will allow the amp to heat up and have no high voltage anywhere in the circuit portion of the amp. (Stock design allowed high voltage to hit plates of power tubes all the time. It just cut voltage to the screens of the outputs and the preamp plates) The reason you are switching the ground of the psu is if the standby switch where to catastrophically fail and short, we are dealing with no potential. Just ground.
Now, as it is so far, the amp has the sweetest, chimey, toneful tone if you run quality 12AY7's in the V1 and V2 positions. It is clean and sweet up to about 5-6 on the preamp control with master wide open. ( You must still complete the power amp board mods listed below)
However, if you want to keep the tube line up stock to save money. You want to preform the following work, just know that another 30-40 bucks in preamp tubes will make the amp a real performer over the AX7's
locate the power resistors in the power supply rail, R29 and R38. R29 is 33k ohm and R38 47k ohm.
Now you want to unsolder and remove the entire part. Studs and all. Now switch them.
R29 positron should now offer 47K ohm resistance to the supply. R38 should now present 33k ohm (Do this if you plan to run 12AX7s in the V1 and V2 positions.) You can switch these two parts and still run 12AY7s in the preamp, the amp is just reigned in even further.
