Ease of Use : 10
How easy is it to get a good sound out of it?
How about Editing patches?
How is the manual for it (if there is one)?
Do you know the firmware revision number? Has your unit been upgraded?
It's very easy to get a great sound from this pedal. I started with all the settings low, and cranked up the controls till I got a great sound. There's no manual, but it is very simple to use. It has tons of sustain and is very sensitive to picking and finger movements.

Sound Quality : 10
Can you get the sound of your favorite artists? Who are they?
Are certain effects (distortion, chorus, ...) very good? Very bad?
What setup (i.e. what guitars and amps) are you using this with?
Is it noisy? On what settings?
Are the effects weak or do they always sound great?
What amp are you using it with?
* gasp * OMFG .. that was my first reaction when I played through this. I've been playing with stock and modded boss pedals, a TS9, a TS808, some Maxons, and a whole lot of other pedals for years and years now.

I use a fender standard strat with DiMarzio single coil pickups (hotter than stock fender), and another Fender with DiMarzio single coil size humbuckers, in H-S-H configuration. In order to get a full and present tone from either guitar, I was forced to use a compression sustainer before my OD/dist pedals, otherwise they'd sound thin and lack presence.

I plugged my old S-S-S strat into this pedal, and sent it straight to my small Marshall 15-watt practice amp. My jaw dropped. I couldn't believe the sounds I was hearing, from this little practice amp. I don't know what AMT puts into their pedal but it sounds nothing like all those boss, Ibanez, Maxon and other pedals I've been wasting my time with over all these years.

It sounds even better with hot pickups - humbuckers. A Les Paul sounds simply divine, heavenly, through the California sound.

The tone is just awesome for hard rocking stuff and possibly some metal too. It is just sooooo responsive, there's tons of sustain and character to the tone, and you really feel "This is IT, I have arrived. YES!". I can honestly say no other dist/od pedal has made me feel this way. It just feels so right and sounds so right.

Truly, over the past 15 years since I've been playing I have heard a lot of people play a lot of stuff, but I have not been able to get this sort of sound unless I'm cranked way up on our gigging Marshall 100 watt stack. I can get the same tone in my bedroom on my small little pipsqueak amp, just imagine how it sounds on stage, on a 10,000 watt system. Yeah, it does blow your mind.

After this, I will never EVER, not under the threat of death, go back to any of those Boss, Ibanez, Digitech, etc off the shelf pedals. I had to wait a month and a half to get the Cali sound because it was out of stock, but it was well and truly worth every minute of wait.

I'd give this a 11 if the rating system allowed it. On a scale of 0-10, if this pedal is a 10, the Boss MT-2 would rate a 4 and the DS-1 would probably score 1.

Reliability : 10
Can you depend on it?
Would you use it on a gig without a backup?
Sure looks well made and tough. I have only had mine a couple of months, so far so good.

Customer Support : 10
If you've dealt with the company, how helpful/friendly were they?
Ever get an upgrade, or try and get it repaired?
I have only dealt with the shop, not AMT themselves, but I have heard great things about them. I was in touch with Mr. Dimitar Nalbantov, the guy who plays the sound clips for the AMT pedals on their website. I am not sure if he represents AMT in any way, but he was very courteous and friendly, and replied to my email in less than a day.

What style of music do you play? Is this a good match?
How long have you been playing? What other gear do you own?
If it were stolen or lost, would you buy it again or get something else?
what do you love about it? What do you hate? What is your favorite feature?
Did you compare it to other products? Which ones? Why did you choose this one?
Anything you wish it had?
Does it help you make music, or does it get in the way?
Anything else you'd like to share?
I would pillage and plunder to get this pedal replaced if it were ever stolen, and I would track down the thief and make him beg to die, and his parents sorry he was ever born. In 15 years, this is the first pedal which left me feeling really really elated, rather like after a whole night of great white hot sex with your mistress and the wife not finding out, and woe betide anyone who dares come between me and my Cali sound. I'm getting the fatal tube next to cater to some of the more bluesy and light stuff I play, and I can tell even before I've placed the order that I'm not going to be disappointed.

quote:AMT California Sound Distortion:
The sound of this pedal emphasizes the middle of the guitar spectrum, but still commands
freedom of control for soft lows and rich highs.
The pedal??s spectrum expansion block is equipped with an overloaded lamp emulator, allows for a bright,
well-readable sound.

Also, this pedal can be connected directly into a line on the control panel and into a IN port
on a tape player, since the pedal OUT port is equipped with a combo emulation system. [/quote]

After fiddling with the knobs on the California...drive...level...highs..lows
...for about a whole 5 minutes...I went to playing.

As straightforward as you can get...plug and play...

Distortion/overdrive pedals...have always been a necessary evil for a sustained and powerful tone on the electric guitar.

The california...is not so much a distortion/overdrive pedal...as it is an all-around cool sound producing pedal...with plenty of crunch and sustain.

It has a high threshold as far as unwanted noise...

In other words...you have to max the dials to get any electronic/unwanted noise.

More well known pedals, in any category, by more well-known companies can't claim this.

Reliability : No Opinion

I do mostly home recording...so not of alot of road wear info could I give.

The thing feels like it's made from granite though.

Feels nice...heavy...solid....well-constructed.

Not any experience here yet...though I have spoke to my buddy who loaned me the pedal and he says they are outstanding...

For me, this pedal is the single best addition I have made to my overall tone.

It's a surprisingly inexpensive and good value "boutique pedal".

Four knobs, Level, Low, High, and Distortion.
It is very easy to get a good sound out of this pedal right out of the box.
I started with everything at 12 o'clock and made my adjustments from there.
Be careful though, this pedal has a good amount of output.
No manual, but you don't need one.

I am using a customized 79 Fender Telecaster with a Strat neck, Seymour Duncan Hotrails in the bridge and a Duncan Hotstack in the neck, Early 80's Charvel with a Dimarzio Air Zone in the bridge, and a mid-80s Charvel with three Dimarzio Single coils, Fender Blues Junior 1X12 tube amp for home recording.

I can get great sounds out of this pedal no matter what guitar I use.
You can get a full, thick, saturated but clear sound (think Foo Fighters Everlong or One By One) with the distortion at 3 o'clock.
Set the Distortion at 9 o'clock and you get a great classic rock distortion.

The distortion range doesn't go from overdrive to Distortion but it does go from a really nice distortion to a more fuller, sweet sounding, saturated distortion.

Through the tube amp it sounds huge and full and really gives you an amazing tone since the pedal has the built-in cabinet modeling.
I also played this direct into my board and it still sounded like I was playing through the tube amp.

Pedal seems very dependable. Casing is very sturdy and the footswitch is a non-click type and is very smooth.
I am a little concerned about the knobs being close to the footswitch and hitting them but I found out these pedals will be in a new case and this will solve that issue.

I don't play out anymore but if I still did I would feel pretty confident using this with out a backup.

I have spoken with the Owner several times and he is very helpful and very friendly.

I don't think I will ever have a problem with this but if I do they have a Lifetime Guarantee.

I have been a professional musician performing and recording music for over 22 years. I play rock along the lines of the Foo Fighters, Rival Schools, Husker Du, Sugar, Third Eye Blind, etc.

If this were stolen I would replace it immediately.

I have had more pedals than you can imagine and I have compared this to a lot of other distortion pedals including a Boss DS-2, Boss DS-1, Rat, Digitech Hot Rod, Subdecay Black Star, Optin 5 Overdrive (which I still love), etc. and this has just become my number 1 distortion pedal on my board.

If you are considering this pedal do not shy away if you don't play those shred type of leads like in the sound clips.
I do play some leads but I mostly play that full out Rock, Pop, Punk style with the big distorted chords, palm muting, etc. and this pedal is perfect for that.

I have been playing guitar for 16 years. I used many distortion pedal. But AMT California Sound never like others. This is unique pedal. Amazing distortion sound, full analog and like real tube amp sound. I think AMT California Sound is unrivalled.

I used sansamp gt2, voodu labs, mxr, boss and others. But in my opinion, AMT California sound is never been compare with them. I listened Dimitars records and I couldnt believed that sound. But that is true. I instantly get same sound when the pedal has been arrived to me. I sent an email to dimitar. And he helped me to buy AMT California Sound. If you want professional sound in your home or stage or records, I think AMT California Sound is the best. And No hum, hiss..

You can listen my sample records with AMT California Sound. Songs is recorded with this setup :

Cort Viva Gold II Left Handed-->AMT CAlifornia Sound-->Ibanez DE7-->PC Sound Card.

Real tube sound. You can easily get sounds of famous guitarists. (like Satriani, vai, petrucci and others.) Very transparent pedal and it wonderfull responses to harmonic. Your guitar screams with AMT California Sound.

Many people asks me, "Is this sound comes only from AMT Pedal". This incredible but its true only one pedal gives you sound that many setups will never give.
