Hi, Daniel. That's a really good observation about the Floyd nut, and yes, it is by design. If we extended the headstock carve back, the low E tuner wouldn't be able to mount where it is, because the tuner needs to be mounted in a totally flat area. There are also design considerations regarding the truss rod, as well.
I can assure you that the nut is 100% totally secure. It isn't going anywhere! For what it's worth, we also epoxy the nut into place for additional stability and doing so prevents any kind of clicking noises at the nut. If you ever need to replace the nut, the epoxy bond is easy broken by briefly heating up the nut with a soldering iron.
