Harry DeArmond was one of the pioneers of electric guitar pickups. His earliest designs were used as add-ons or retrofits for acoustic guitars to electrify them on stage. DeArmond applied for a patent on the pickup shown here back on November 18, 1946, more than 70 years ago. This pickup – with the volume control built-in – predates Leo Fender's introduction of the Esquire (Broadcaster/Telecaster) by nearly three years.
