If you are unhappy with the sound of your current guitar, and you want to upgrade it to sound really great, one of the simplest ways to do this is to considered switching one of more of the pickups to get closer to the sound that you are looking for. Of course, there is more that goes into the sound of a good guitar than just its pickups. No one can deny that the wood that the guitar is made out of, as well as the rest of the electronics in the guitar also contribute to a significant degree to a guitars sound. That being said, there is no denying the impact that replacing an old dull lifeless pickup with a modern lively pickup can have on the overall sound of a guitar. With this in mind, I would like to offer my review of the Gibson Angus Young Signature Humbucker for your consideration. Read on and see if this pickup is something that you might want to audition the next time you are at your local music store to see if it meets your needs.
The Gibson Angus Young Signature Humbucker retails for $203.22, and it can be had from most musical instrument chain stores for a discounted price of $144.99. As most of you who are reading this review probably already know, Angus Young is the lead guitarist for ACDC, and no one can deny that he gets a really rocking sound out of his Gibson SG. I am not going to promise you that if you replace the pickup in your guitar with an Angus Young Signature Humbucker that you are going to sound exactly like Angus Young. Obviously there is a lot that goes into a musician’s overall guitar sound, and some of that can not be attributed alone to the type of pickup that one uses in their guitar. Much of Mr. Young’s great sound comes from the man himself, namely his playing style, and the way he moves his fingers across the fretboard, and the action of his pick hand. However, it sure doesn’t hurt to have some of the same or similar equipment as this world famous rock star has.
The Gibson Angus Young Signature Humbucker Pickup has a modern, yet vintage sound. The coils on the pickup are made with enamel coated wire, and matched coils. Matched coils provide a rich creamy sound when they overdrive an amp. The Angus Young Signature Humbucker is a very high output pickup, and it is based on the design of the Gibson 498T. However, it has a few more turns of wire on its pickup bobbins, and thus it has a slightly higher output than a Gibson 498T. As a matter of fact, it is the highest output Alnico Magnet pickup in the Gibson family of humbucking pickups. Yes, there are hotter pickups made by Gibson, such as the Dirty Fingers Humbucker and the 500T, but these pickups are made with Ceramic Magnets, and thus they have a whole different type of tone and sound that is associated with them, as compared to the Angus Young Signature Humbucker, which is made using Alnico V Magnets.
As some of you who are reading this review might already know, adding more turns of wire to a pickup coil will make it “hotter,” but some high end frequencies are diminished and some midrange frequencies are accentuated, which can lead to a muddy sound. In order to compensate for this Gibson has chosen to use a hot Alnico V Magnet in the Angus Young Signature Humbucker. An Alnico V Magnet gives a brighter, sharper, more aggressive and attacking sound that an Alnico II Magnet, and this compensates for the potential muddiness that can potentially result from a pickup that is overwound. This makes for a high output pickup that accentuates the upper midrange and high end frequencies. The result is that the Angus Young Signature Humbucker is a high output humbucking pickup with a blend of modern and vintage qualities, and that makes it one of the best sounding pickups available today for modern and classic rock music.
The Angus Young Signature Humbucker Pickup is also double wax potted. Double wax potting ensures that there are no open nooks and crannies that can result in unwanted microphonics and harsh shrill feedback. This is especially important for a pickup that is apt to be subjected to the high pressure volumes that go along with playing loud and heavy rock music. The Gibson Angus Young Signature Humbucker also comes with 4 conductor wiring, which makes it easy to wire this pickup for any number of series/parallel/split-coil variations.
Well how does this pickup sound? I would like to say that I got to try it out in a Gibson Angus Young Signature SG, but unfortunately that is not the case. My local music store did not have one in stock, but assures me that they will be getting one in soon. When they do, I shall attempt to review it. However, they did have a an Epiphone G-400 SG that was used, and the previous owner had replaced the pickups with none other than the same pickups that are in the Gibson Angus Young Signature SG, namely a Gibson Angus Young Signature Humbucker in the bridge position and a Gibson 1957 Classic Humbucker in the neck position. I shall limit my comments to discussing just the Gibson Angus Young Signature Humbucker in this review.
I decided that the best way to test the Gibson Angus Young Signature Humbucker was to play some of my favorite riffs from AC/DC. This pickup was able to make the Epiphone sound like a significantly higher priced guitar. The sound that this pickup delivered was great. It was able to be as vicious and biting as I could want, while at the same time still being able to generate a vintage overdriven sound. It was able to overdrive the tube section of the small Peavey I was plugged into, and it gave a warmth and depth to it that was somewhat unexpected from a high output pickup. The matched coils produced an even, warm, creamy, smooth sound, while the Alnico V Magnet accentuated the high end and upper midrange frequencies. Power chords were also a delight to hear, as they were rich, full, and punchy.
Well who is the Gibson Angus Young Signature Humbucker best suited for? It is an ideal pickup for someone who wants a dominant and commanding sounding pickup, that is able to cut hard and heavy rock, as well as classic rock and blues. It is an excellent pickup for placement in the bridge position of the guitar. If you are considering replacing both pickups in your guitar, a good combination would be a Gibson Angus Young Signature Humbucker with Alnico V Magnets in the bridge position, and a Gibson 1957 Classic Humbucker with Alnico II Magnets in the neck position. This would be the same combo as the Gibson Angus Young Signature SG has. If you want a little more of an overdriven sound in the neck position, I would place a Gibson 1957 Classic Plus in the neck position, as it has a bit more output than a 1957 Classic, and I feel that it would be a good combo with the Angus Young Signature Humbucker.
