Let’s get the bragging part over with first - biggest fro in the band!
These guys changed my life - it was 1973 and I was 19, a huge fan of Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, but didn’t know shit about funk and R&B. I played with these guys for 4 years, playing James Brown, Sly, Curtis Mayfield, Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Kool & The Gang, The Temptations, The Spinners… oh man, what an education. One of the sax players also played guitar and I gradually learned how to play funky rhythm guitar from him. I never lost my love for rock and blues, but I learned that I could love many kinds of music equally. Tower of Power blew me away and that got me listening to fusion, progressive rock, and eventually classical and straight ahead jazz. Now my iPhone has an insanely diverse music library - everything from Jimi to Gentle Giant to Beyonce, and I love it all - thanks to that gig with Pure Hell.
Moral of the story - don't get stuck listening to only one style of music - there's so much out there to enjoy!

The record company’s incredibly lame attempt at a Rocket Science cover - I wish I could’ve seen that meeting! 3. The sewn-together dog was going to be the cover for Well to the Bone - looks more like Silence of the Lambs. That’s why I decided to do the artwork myself!
Reality Check wins the award as the ugliest and most unprofessional artwork of my career. Thick is also terrible, but when the label insists on using a band photo as the cover, all hope is lost - you just can’t live that kinda shit down. HBC is the funniest - it’s so nerdy looking that we begged the artist, “please, can’t you do something to us?” So he made us into holograms which are also nerds. The album covers are in the Photos section - funny comments are welcome, and if you have your own terrible covers to share it might make me feel better. 🙂
