History
The 1st reissue Les Paul Custom began production in August 1968 to January 1969. Basic construction includes the Honduran mahogany one piece body, one piece mahogany neck with long tenon and a two piece centre seamed maple top. The control cavity shape is unique to this initial run and is used to separate the 68s from the early 69s.
From February 1969, the following changes appear in the Les Paul Custom series (dates are approximate):
Feb 1969 – April 69 (Early 69):
· The control cavity routing becomes similar to those found on the 50s Les Pauls
· A thin layer of maple appears between the one piece mahogany body and the two piece maple top. This is known as the cross-banded layer.
· The dot on the ЃgiЃh disappears from the Gibson logo.
May 1969 – November 69 (Mid 69):
· The neck tenon becomes slightly shorter (a.k.a. transition tenon).
· The neck becomes three-piece from the original one piece.
· The top becomes multi-pieced maple.
November 1969 onwards (Late 69):
· The maple cross-banded layer appears in-between 2 pieces of mahogany (a.k.a. three-piece Ѓgpancake bodyЃh).
· Volute appears behind the headstock.
· The neck tenon becomes short in the early 70s.
