Gibson will take special orders from certain dealers that sell a lot of guitars. Yamano has been one of them since the 70's economic boom in Japan (economically speaking bust as you know - but still going strong as far as guitar buyers). Their special orders are usually high-end production line - not Custom Shop. There are exceptions: I owned a red R-7 that was a Yamano in 1998. It had the Custom Shop label.
Mine did not say "Yamano". Or "made for Yamano" for that matter.
Think Guitar Trader or one of many USA dealers of 2-3 decades ago.
As far as what is Yamano they are a retail dealer selling by internet or at it's own stores in Japan.
Generally speaking, japanese guitar buyers are far more attentive to detailing than the "average" american guitar buying consumer. That is why Gibson usually does a more thorough QC on Yamano destined guitars than any ole USA dealer. The two Yamano R-7's I owned had NO flaws. Perfect in every way.
Sometimes Yamano destined guitars will be over-produced or end up as "seconds" due to stringent QC. You will occasionally find THOSE guitars at USA dealers.
