Brazilian or Amazon rosewood was, for many years, the preferred choice for acoustic guitars not only for its acoustic properties and appearance (it was a top choice for furniture making because of its spectacular grain) but mostly because it was cheap and plentiful. Today, it is a scarce wood and its supply tightly controlled simply because it was harvested to near extinction. Its scarcity has resulted in very high prices so instruments made with this wood command top dollar. The collector's market for vintage guitars has also placed a high value on guitars made from this tonewood and along the way it became an accepted 'fact' that this tonewood produced the best acoustic sound. These conditions have resulted in the wrong assumption among many guitar players that Brazilian rosewood is the ultimate in tone for acoustic guitars. In reality, many other types of rosewood are as good as, if not better than, the Brazilian variety as a tonewood for acoustics. Brazilian rosewood's ample supply and cheap price were the main reasons it was used in the past, it's a simple as that.
