I once got a call from guitar center corporate. They were unhappy with me. Seriously.
The problem it turns out is that I had bought 5 R9s and I had just returned four of them. They were irate. The regional manager was irate. My wife was even irate, asking "How could you do this?" I think my dog was a bit miffed too. Why did I do this horrid thing?
Simple... their policy as explained to me, while I was trying each of the best of them at the local stores was "Well, you know you can just buy it and if it doesn't work out for any reason you can always return it. That way you can test it at home." So that's what I did. In my home studio, with a week to figure it out, I sorted them out.
One week later I returned four of them. And I returned them all to one store, the one closest to me, which made the manager blow a gasket, he was positively distraught. For the record, I had called and asked if I had to return items to the stores I purchased from. And the answer was no, I could make returns at ANY guitar center.
So here's the worst part of all:
Three weeks later, I returned the only one I'd kept of the five guitars. I told them it was an iffy guitar for me anyway, as I almost returned all of them at the same time. And I actually called first to make sure the manager was there. And as expected he asked me to come back to his office, where he asked me if I thought it was a joke, or somehow funny, or what my intentions were buying the guitars.
And I told him - I exercised the policy your sales guys deliver me every time I am on the fence on a guitar here. What's the problem? My intentions were to buy a guitar that met my expectations; these did not. That's all.
I ended up driving to los angeles and buying a guitar there, which met all my expectations.
So my answer is this: As long as people are being offered the opportunity to buy a guitar and take it back within some amount of time, like 30 days, why shouldn't they? And with the ease of flipping stuff for near new prices on ebay, if they don't have the luxury of getting it at a major retailer, in order to do a thorough test, why shouldn't they?
Okay, so finally the silver lining:
The end of that year, I got a 20% private event extra-special customer letter to use on anything in the store. I guess they missed the part about my 25,000 worth of historic custom shop les pauls all ending up returned. Go figure. I used it on a Jimmy Page custom authentic VOS, which of course I did not return.
