Hello to all. Jim here. It has been brought to my attention that the Keith Merrow's post is causing some concerns and issues the way things usually do on the internet. So, let's address the issues here.
Yes, there were mistakes/issues with both his guitars, the painted binding was not crisp, the side dots were off center--too low at the end of the board, and the fingerboard shrank, causing frets to be cheese grater like and pop out. There are pictures for the world to see, so I'm not going to sit here and say it didn't happen. It did, it sucked, and we tried to remedy things, but Keith chose to move on. Who can blame him, I don't. Keith's a great guy, player, friend, etc. In the case of defending myself, not passing the buck, because the buck ultimately stops with me...I bought "KILN DRIED" ebony, which means it shouldn't shrink to that extent, but it did. So now I keep all my fingerboards in a dehumidifier room and double check with a moisture meter we are at 6-7% moisture. I should have checked on Keith's, but back then I didn't. Secondly, I don't do everything in the shop, I have employees that I expect to do their jobs properly and to S7G standards, obviously that didn't happen, but I am ultimately responsible, so yes I am to blame.
I'd like to say we are perfect here at S7G and never make mistakes or let anything slip through the cracks or go out without proper QC. But, we are human, I am human, and I don't live life mistake free. The great side of the story is KEITH DIDN'T LOSE ANY MONEY, because the guitars were pro bono. And to the 4 people who ordered a Spectral model, they will be perfect, so no need to worry on that front. And Keith will still get paid his royalties for those guitars because that was our deal and I am a man of my word. So if that is "disrespecting my artists" then I must really be an awful human being.
I am a smart dude and learn from my mistakes, and I won't be rushed anymore. I'd rather be yelled at for taking too long or missing a deadline than have a guitar rushed to completion and be screwed up.
As far as the inane comments of me "disrespecting" the artists, or S7G "going down the drain", or any of the other negative comments...ridiculous and laughable. Funny the people who make those comments aren't customers, just people with opinions and the need to make that opinion heard. God bless America and the military that allows us to have that free speech. Work a week with me in the shop and see the effort and passion I put in everyday, then you can hide behind your keyboard and spew idiocy. But anyone who is a customer or knows me, knows it's untrue, yet I have to make a post because of this silly crapstorm.
The irony is there are lots of guitar companies out there who make mistakes and send guitars out that are "close enough" or not quite right and people slam them as well. That end of this business is awful, yet unavoidable. The whole reason I started S7G was because a certain huge brand's guitars weren't satisfying to my standards. I/we make mistakes, they shouldn't get past QC, but Keith's did. Sorry, for those who are able to live their lives and build things out of wood mistake free and are expert painters, I commend you and bow at your feet. For the rest who are realistic and understand that not all things work out, rest assured I stand behind my product and anyone who has had an issue has had the issue resolved.
As I have said in previous posts, I'm not looking to screw people out of their hard earned money. I want to build great guitars...97% of the time we do. Of the several hundred guitars that have come out of the shop in the past 4-5 years, less than 10 have had any issues beyond normal guitar issues. But for the sake of easy math, lets say S7G has made 350 guitars in the past 4-5 years and 10 (high estimate actually) have had problems, that is 2.8% of the guitars coming out of the shop. And, those 2.8% of customers either got new replacement guitars that were smoking, or they got their money back (sometimes I'm slow with this due to cash flow), but they get their money back if they didn't want a replacement guitar. Ask how many other companies stand behind their product that way as you decide where to spend your hard earned money.
So, yes there were and will be again, mistakes made, and things won't be perfect all the time, but I NEVER screw anyone. I can't please everyone, won't even try, and some people will always speak out of the other end of their alimentary canals, I can't worry about that. What I can worry about is the customers and dealers who do trust me and my company with their hard earned money will get great guitars or they get their money back. That's what I have done since I started and will continue to do. Enough said.
Peace,
Jim
