Studio Set-Up JMP-1
Valve Midi Pre-amp.
At Gary's home studio, nearly all of the guitar sounds are produced with a Marshall JMP-1 Valve Midi Pre Amp. For ease of use, the emulated output is plugged directly into the mixing desk and the channels switched via the 4 way foot switch. Outboard effects are placed in the stereo effects loop, making for a very flexible setup. This configuration can be heard on the sound track to the film The Changeling, after many appearances on home demos.
It also means that having a Marshall 100 watt amp and cab blasting away at home is not necessary as the JMP-1 covers most of the sounds, making it less annoying for the rest of the household.

Gary Moore
Gary Moore in 2008. Photo by Tibban99.
Bio: Robert William Gary Moore was born on April 4th 1952 in Northern Ireland. He grew up in east Belfast as one of five children, and left home very young as a teenager – mainly tired of the troubles in the family. Gary’s new home was Dublin, where he met his personal mentor, and a greatest influence – Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac.
Gary’s first serious band was “Skid Row”, which he joined in 1969. During this time he met Phil Lynott, who in 1974 invited Gary to join “Thin Lizzy” – after the departure of founding member Eric Bell. Moore stayed with the band for about a year, after which he joined another band called Colosseum II, with whom he would play up until 1977/78.
In 1977 Gary was asked to re-join Thin Lizzy – first as a temporary replacement for Brian Robertson, and on a permanent basis a year later.
In 1979 Gary decided to leave the band, and start focusing on his solo career.
Already well-known on the Britain’s music scene, Moore soon became one of the most popular and revered guitarist of the 90s world-wide. He released a number of highly successful albums, including “Still Got The Blues” (1990), which became one of the fan’s favorites.
Gary’s talent and dedication to music enabled him to share the stage with such blues and rock luminaries as B.B. King, Albert King, George Harrison and Greg Lake. He also guested on a number of albums recorded by high profile musicians, including a cameo appearance playing the lead guitar solo on “She’s My Baby”.
Gary Moore died of a heart attack in his sleep at the age of 58, during the early hours of 6 February 2011.
Gary Moore’s Electric Guitars:

1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard
Gary Moore Peter Green Les Paul
Previously owned by Peter Green who bought it secondhand in 1966. Peter was sort of a mentor to Gary in the early days, so after leaving Fleetwood Mac in 1970 he decided to lent the guitar to Gary. Moore eventually ended up owning the guitar completely, respecting Peter’s concern that the guitar “would have a good home” with Gary.
The guitar is pretty much stock, except for the neck pickup which has been rotated 180 degrees so that the exposed pole pieces of the original Gibson PAF “humbucking” pickup are opposite of those found on production examples. Also, the two bottom knobs with replaced by Gary with the more modern “reflector” knobs, which he found more easier to control.
Gary sold the guitar after 37 years of owning it, faced with some major financial problems. The instrument reached more than $2 million when it was auctioned in 2006, and it’s current owner a private collector Phil Winfiel, president of Maverick Music US.
It was without a doubt one of Gary favorite guitars, and he used it very often alongside his other 1959 Les Paul (mentioned later in the article).
19?? Gibson Les Paul
Gary Moore Unknown Skid Row Les Paul
Gary played this guitar in the early 1970s, but unfortunately due lack of decent quality visual material we haven’t been successful in identifying the exact model of the guitar. There are only a couple of photos and videos of Gary from that period, and judging from them the guitar seems to be a red colored Gibson Les Paul with white binding, trapeze bridge and two P90 pickups.
Our guess is that this guitar is some sort of a Les Paul copy – main reason being the branding on the headstock which does resemble Gibson logo on some frames, but looks completely different on others. Also the trapeze-style bridge is fairly short in length when compared to ones found on some of the early Les Paul models. Last thing is the body finish, which looks like red-burst, but again uncommon to any of the early Les Pauls that we know of.
If you have anything to add on this subject, please post your thoughts either in the comment bellow, or by contacting us directly.
1960s Gibson Melody Maker
Gary Moore Melody Maker
Played mainly live in the mid to late 70s with Thin Lizzy. Gary replaced original neck pickups with a white DiMarzio humbucker.
Charvel San Dimas
Gary Moore Guitar Gear Equipment Amps Effects
Used in the 80s. He actually had two of these guitars, one in white and other in red, both with a single EMG 81 pickup in the bridge. They were heavily modified by Gary’s tech Keith Page, who removed the original two humbuckers from them and installed a single one.
The white’s guitar neck was later replaced with Jackson replacement neck with rosewood fretboard (previously maple) for the 1989 “After The War” tour.
Jackson Soloist
Jackson Soloist Gary Moore
Gary used a couple of these in the late 80s – early 90s. He had one model with a single pickup in the bridge whose body was covered in national flags, and at least two white models with Jackson in the neck, and EMG pickup in the bridge.
Paul Reed Smith Custom
Over the Hills and Far Away guitar Gary Moore
Gary owned and played a couple of PRS guitars, mostly on the album “Wild Frontier”. Perhaps the most notable was the red PRS custom from 1986 that can be seen of couple of photos taken in the late 90s, and a similar blue model seen in the “Over the Hills and Far Away” music video.
Hamer Explorer SN0731
Gary Moore Hamer Explorer
In 80s Gary also experimented with some of the Hamer models. His first was an Explorer-shaped Hamer made of maple wood, which he got in 1984. The guitar was custom built for Gary, and it featured natural body finish and matching flame-top headstock, two DiMarzio humbuckers, block fretboard inlays, and a fixed bridge.
Hamer Vector
Gary Moore Hamer V Vector
Played in the late 80s/early 90s. The guitar was finished in light blue, and it featured a single humbucker in the bridge position.
Hamer Phantom A5
Hamer A5
This guitar was featured on a photograph taken of Gary’s guitar collection sometime in the 90s. We are not sure if Gary ever performed live with it, or recorded in the studio.
Gary’s Phantom A5 featured red finish, triple-coil pickup in the bridge. and slanted single-coil pickup in the neck position. It was also fitted with a Kahler tremolo system.
Hamer GM Special
Hamer GM Special
Also used in the 80s and early 90s. This guitar was made specifically for Gary, although it was mostly based on mid-80s Special. Many people named this guitar The “Gary Moore Model”, but it was kept unofficial.
Gary’s Hamer Specials had two DiMarzio humbuckers, 22-fret mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard, and a Floyd Rose tremolo bridge.
He owned at least two of these guitars – a white one, and a black one.
1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard
Gary Moore 1959 Gibson Les Paul
This guitar was bought in 1989 by Gary’s guitar tech Graham Liley. Gary first used it on one of his perhaps best known pieces – “Still Got the Blues”, and “Oh Pretty Woman” – on that same album.  Since then it became one of his favorite guitars, and he used it on nearly all the records up until his death in 2011.
It’s important to note that this guitar was not the one featured on the “After Hours” album cover. That was another 1959 Les Paul, which Gary didn’t particularly like, and ended up selling it.

1960/61 Fender Stratocaster
Gary Moore Guitar Gear Equipment Amps Effects
Gary owned and played a couple of different Stratocasters, with his main being the one finished in Salmon pink. He was also seen playing a white reissue model of the 1962 Strat, and a black one with Floyd Rose tremolo.
Here’s Gary’s opinion on Strats:
“They’re all stock. They’re stupid guitars. One of them is a real old one-like a ’61.I guess it’s pink. It’s my main one that was stolen before I went on tour, and it was later returned.I think one of the British customs people must have stolen it.It went on the Interpol computer, and then the FBI over here was after it,and suddenly it reappeared in Houston. The guy must have gotten cold feet, and put it on a plane to somewhere he knew I’d get it.In the meantime I bought this white one, which is a brand new version of a ’62,with a rosewood fingerboard. It’s also stock.I just got to like it,so I’ve been using it for most of the shows”
Gary Moore talking about his Les Paul and his red Strat:

1968 Fender Telecaster
Fender Telecaster Blonde Rosewood 1968
Gary used this guitar on the original recording of “Movin’ On” from the 1990 album “Still Got the Blues”.
The guitar featured blonde finish, two original Fender single-coil pickups, and a rosewood fretboard.
1963 Gibson ES-335
 Gary Moore Gibson ES 335
Acquired from Johnny Fean – Gary’s old friend, and a guitarist of the Irish band “Horslips”. Gary played it in his later years, and seemed to really enjoy it. It was completely stock, with the original pickups in it.
Gibson Firebird
gary moore gibson firebird
He played this red Firebird a couple of times on stage in the 2000s. It was pretty much stock, with two mini-humbuckers and a fixed bridge.
Gary Moore’s Acoustic Guitars:

Takamine
Gary Moore Guitar Gear Equipment Amps Effects
- Which acoustic guitars do you use on stage?
“Takamine. They are really excellent guitars really. I’ve got this black 12 string which they made; there’s only two of them in the world, one built for Greg Lake and one for me. Then I’ve got another one which is the six string semi-jazz model with the electric and EQ built in.” (Gary Moore)
Models:
- Takamine 6-string
- Takamine PT-015
- Takamine 12-string
Ozark Resonator
National Duolian Resonator
Bought and used specifically for the song “Suntrack” on the album “Close As You Get” released in 2007.
Gary Moore’s Amps:

- Marshall 1959 Super Lead
Used for heavier tones.
- Soldano SLO100
Used in the early days – up until 1993, when he started using Marshall almost exclusively.
- Marshall JCM2000 DSL100
Gary was using this amp for more than 10 years consistently prior to his death. It most likely came as a replacement for Soldano.
- Marshall JTM45 Re-issue
Used on Still Got the Blues with Marshall 1960B 4 x12″ cabinets fitted with Electrovoice 12M speakers instead of the usual Celestions. All of the JTM45 amplifiers owned by Gary were stock models straight from the factory, with no modifications.
- Marshall Super Bass 100
- 1969/70 Fender Showman
Used for the songs such as “Need Your Love So Bad” and similar – but mostly where Marshalls couldn’t deliver as much reverb as Gary wanted.
- Marshall 1960B 4 x12″ cabinets
