TRB: Does your music reflect any periods of your life? What do the lyrics mean to you?
Dev: Yes, our music certainly reflects those things that are happening to us at the time, just like photos are imprints of the past. Sometimes I’m listening to our songs and recalling who I was while writing it, what was troubling me, what was I interested in and what carried me away. By the way our songs were written in a different periods of time (the band will celebrate 5 years in the oncoming January) and thus they differ greatly. They symbolize the changes that were taking place at all those times.
And about lyrics- I set a high value on them. It is a very important part of a good song. Words are powerful weapon.
TRB: Do you prefer to write in Russian or in English? which do you prefer singing in, English or Russian?
Dev: Well, that's an interesting question… I like English very much; I like to read lyrics of other English-singing bands. I regard English as a highly distinct, bright and figural language. Writing lyrics in English is pure joy. But you should know it more than fluently to do so, because creative work does not stand any bounds. It’s a pity I'm not so good at it to transfer all my thoughts and constructs freely. That’s why it is easier for me to write in Russian. But someday, I hope, it will change.
I like to sing in both languages, maybe a little more in English.
TRB: Will you ever provide translations to the songs you have in Russian?
Dev: An EP will be launched this fall. It will be in English and will contain 2 songs from our previous album (called “A step into Darkness”) which I translated into English. Also there will be a few songs from the new album, also in English. I think we will continue working in this direction. We liked it.
And we'll try to provide translations to our Russian songs in the future
TRB: Do any of you have tattoos? If so, and you're willing to share, what are they of and what do they mean to you?
Dev: Yes, I have a tattoo on my left arm, from shoulder to elbow. This is a tattoo in New school style. It looks like uncomplicated drawing of a butterfly, stars, roses and leafs on the face side of the arm and a hardcore heart in razor wire on the inner side of the arm.
This drawing is an allegory to the famous saying “by steep and toilsome ways to the stars” (per aspera ad astra).
I think I won't stop at this point and soon will tattoo something also. By the way, Fred wanted to do a biomechanic style tattoo a long time ago. I think he will find the time this fall.
TRB: When did you decide to turn music into a career? what made you choose music?
Dev: I've liked music since I was a child. From the year of 7 I played piano and from 14 the guitar. My life was always connected with music, so I did not even have to choose, this happened by itself.
TRB: Do you remember the exact moment you fell in love with music? if so would you like to share it with us?
Dev: From the earliest childhood, music always meant everything to me. If I try to remember my most blazing musical experience of the childhood, then it certainly would be Pink Floyd. Thanks to my Dad I started to listen to them. Can’t clearly remember how old I was. Maybe 10. From those times this band is my eternal favorite.
TRB: Do you feel like you ever have to alter your lyrics to make them more well understood, or do you just let them flow and let the listener make up their own mind?
Dev: No. Making lyrics easier for understanding is not my goal. I like to make people wander and think it over, to make them create their own points of view about the meaning of the song. That’s much more interesting.
TRB: What are your goals as musicians? Is there anything specific you want to accomplish?
Dev: Earning a Grammy! (Laughs)
Seriously speaking we’d like our music to be heard by as much people as possible. And we’d like to dedicate all our lives to our labor of love.
TRB: When can we expect a full length release to be available?
Dev: This fall will come a full album in Russian, and an EP on English.
We haven’t thought seriously of an English LP yet, though it’s worth trying.
TRB: What are your thoughts on style in music? Do you have to dress the part or can you be original and still be taken seriously?
Dev: We don’t make all that fuss about our genre. We just play what we like. Our music contains many different elements. Classifying is a critic’s job on the whole and besides it’s quite hard. We call our style melodic nu metal, because we have to call it somehow anyway. We listen to lots of music and it affects us subconsciously, but we don’t try to be like somebody also, just stay ourselves.
TRB: As a fan, how can I get my hands on Otklonenie music?
Dev: If you live in Russia It’s easy. You can just buy our record or get it as a present on the concert. For other countries it’s much harder. Thanks to Myspace we acquired fans in other countries. And they are constantly asking us where to buy our record. Right now we can only tell them to listen to tracks available on Myspace and in the internet.
TRB: How hard is it to get yourselves out there and get heard?
Dev: That’s quite hard, especially in Russia. Russia is not like USA. Here the main artistic “feature” is having loads of money, and music itself doesn’t really matter. And on the whole there are difficulties with heavy music in Russia. Literally it doesn’t exist. Heavy bands are not broadcasted neither on TV nor radio and so on. Well there are many problems with musical industry in Russia. We just hope that someday the situation changes and we will benefit.
TRB: Anyone ever tell you you couldn't make it as an artist? If so, what would you say to them now?
Dev: We were lucky not to hear this. We always were confident and we will stay that way.
TRB: How hard is it, in today's saturated market, to come up with such an original sound?
Dev: Frankly speaking its very hard.
