It's actually not that difficult to do. If you listen to the opening of "Invader" on Judas Priest's Stained Class album, there is a similar effect.
I have done it myself with an old Ibanez AD-9 Analog Delay. All that needs to be done is to put the Repeat control all the way up, turn the Delay Level control up and then manipulate the Delay Time control. Changing the Delay Time control changes the pitch of the echoes upon which you can get the same "spaceship" self-oscillation sounds.
I used to use the AD-9 in guitar lessons years ago and would make those "Hot On Your Heels" sounds for the students. Kids loved it.
BTW, Maxon AD-80s for the US market actually had their circuit tweaked so that they would be able to go into self-oscillation. I guess Japanese guitarists didn't want to be able to do this?

interesting.. so how do you make the "explosion" sound at the end then? where just waves of feedback are blowing your head off

its been a while since i have done it but its either by turning the delay time down or turning the feedback down
