I think that comes from that old 'Noel is dead" rumor that was going around in the mid 60's.
Something about Noel being a casualty of a 'space trip' and being replaced by an alien. There are/were clues in songs lyrics and album covers.In STPLSD Noel was supposedly the person that was warned 'Don't open that door!" but ignored it and was 'swept' out into space. The aliens felt responsible for not installing seatbelts and offered to replace Noel with one of their own(a look alike), however aliens aren't familiar with playing bass and Jimi had to 'take over' as the bass player for many songs. The aliens considered this an experiment to see if one of them they could pass for a 60's icon. EXP(experiment) on tha Axis album is a clear 'clue' to this, with the line 'Well you can't always believe everything you see, can you?". Others clues include the famous " 'cuse me, while I kiss this 'guy'" alluding to the 'kiss of death' in in some belief systems(B.S.), another is the 'That's Bob Dylan's grandma' over there'...indicating that Noel may not really be who he appears to be. Notice that STPLSD was never released on an album, only the B side of a single...could this be that the information was never to get out to the publc? It boggles the mind.
Also the name Noel if read backwards clearly reads 'leon", which many have speculated is the real name of the of the alien imposter. However realizing that the name Noel is a common 'earth' name, many have discounted this 'clue'.
The album name Are You Experienced?(with the question mark included) if unscrambled, gives the phone number to an 'entity' living on an island Earth base in the mid-Atlantic(possibly a mountain top that still rises above the ocean level from Atlantis) that claims "Look to Leo"...Now...this is an amazing 'clue, for if we take the Name Noel...read it backwards and drop the 'N"...we get.."Leo"...Leo is a star constellation(space people home?)....also if we look at Leo...it is a lion, an animal many people relate to Africa....the Noel imposter wore his hair or 'mane' in an 'Afro', which was very unusual for a white guy in the '60's....
It is also said that if one takes LSD on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday continuously and then hold the album cover of AXIS up to a mirror upside down facing 'N'orth(the 'N' it self was the key to this alignment) at a 33 degree angle when it's raining...the image of Noel appears in the lower left corner holding what appears to be a sign that reads "I'm not dead, just spaced out", however many people that have tried this ended up as babbling idiots and were not considered 'reliable' sources of this valuable information.
Some have speculated this is what happened to Chuck Wein...which is somewhat evident in the film 'Rainbow Bridge".
Was Chuck(The Wizard) trying to communicate with them?
There have been many debates over the years as to did Noel actually die in space or was he still drifting around out there. Was Noel actually replaced by Leon, an alien from the constellation Leo?
To this day no one has come forward with conclusive proof one way or another.
Are these really 'clues'.........or could it just be the wild imagination of DeeJays and gullible fans, much to the like of 'Paul is Dead' involving Beatles album, lyrics that also arose in the early '70's....was the imposter Paul(McCartney)
really just 'Leon' in another 'guise'(being replaced by a human Billy Cox) after moving from the Jimi Hendrix Experience to the Beatles?

Did he replace other music figures or just go back home with Elvis?"
