The music which has at various times been labeled "free jazz", "the new thing", "the avant-garde", or "energy music" has attracted more than its fair share of critics--many of somewhat dubious qualifications--who are all too ready to speak negatively of it. After all, even to the ears of many 1997 listeners, this music, which has been around for nearly 40 years (depending on who you ask), still sounds like people "going crazy" on their instruments, fooling around, and generally performing in an "unmusical" manner. And this isn't just the reaction of the lay person. Many jazz musicians- -people who have been immersed in their art for decades--simply can't get with this music. It's viewed either as "too far out", or as nonsense playing from people who haven't learned the basics of jazz improvisation.
