Last thing I care about is looking "cool" especially in the eyes of people like you.I got bored with this kind of music long before you started playing it.
Seriously,what is so great about May Lian's playing?Chops?You,yourself can probably name a lot of people both in Russia and abroad who can play on the same technical level.Musicality?Gimme a break,he is a decent musician but he is not JS or even Ivan Smirnov.Don't get me wrong I don't have anything against him or his playing .I couldn't care less.I'm just trying to make a point:these days you don't need anybody to learn how to play alternate picking or 3 octave arpejjios,all the information is out there,just go and get it,instructional videos,internet etc.If you got brains and ears you'll get it sooner or later.as well as the right kind of vibrato and things like that.What people,that are trying to play this kind of music,need, is to excercise their musicality,listen to different kinds of music,study harmony,arrangement(not only for rock music),otherwise they become what musicians here in States call "metallheads".
For example,Joe Satriani studied with Lenny Tristano.Do you know who that guy was?If you go to satriani.ru and look at the list of the tunes he likes you'll be surprised .A lot of it is not rock,but knowing this music makes Joe who he is,which is a great MUSICIAN
