Was your breadth of musical/emotional expression intentional, or a by-product of each song that occurred as your composed it?
Steve Vai: When people create art, and they're compelled to pull from their imagination, they have no choice but to create product that's a reflection of their personality. If you're feeling emotional when you're creating something, it'll sound that way. If you're trying to copy a trendy pop band, it'll sound that way. I believe we all have the ability to express emotion and passion in our work if we can cut through the psycholigical obstacles. It's not confined to reproduction of the blues.
