You understood me perfectly
To Nuno and Fluff
Out of all the people you mentioned, only Herbie and Tony Williams for me are jazz musicians, but even these two did so many other things during their careers,so I don't know...See,for me,jazz is the kind of music that's being played with acoustic bass, using certain vocabulary, certain rhythm concept etc.
And Coltrane is certainly a product of this whole thing, but this does not mean that if you're playing Coltrane tunes, you're playing jazz.Style!!!That's the right word.I hope I made myself clear.
P.S. I,personally, can not listen to the most of this jazz-rock-fusion stuff from the 70's.I can't stand it,the sound is so bad,all the music is so structured, constructed, unnatural, the material itself is horrible(I mean nobody plays this tunes and nobody will,'cause they're bad)Of course there are some exceptions, but very few,I like, for example,Wayne Shorter's "Native Dancer" with Milton Nascimento and Chick Corea's "Return to Forever",the one with "Crystal Silence" etc.
P.P.S.speaking about weird harmonic progressions - try playing Wayne Shorter tunes.
