Electric Guitars for Sale Buyers Guide
1. What do I need to buy?
Essentials: The most obvious is the electric guitar itself. You will also need an amplifier and a cable that runs between the guitar and the amplifier. With this equipment you should be able to make enough sound to let your family know you are up and running.
Desirables: Not all electric guitars for sale will come with a strap. The strap will hold the guitars weight on your shoulders while playing standing up. You will not want to wait long before getting a good strap. You will also want to acquire a tuning device to make sure your strings are in tune with each other. Finally, a guitar stand will make sure you don't have to lean your electric guitar precariously against the wall.
Accessories: Once you have all the basics mentioned above you will want to expand your equipment to include effects pedals so you can alter the standard guitar sound and quickly change between sounds with a foot switch. It is also a good idea to get a good quality travel case to protect your brand new electric guitar before it gets knocked.
2. Popular Brands of Electric Guitars
Gibson Les Paul Stratocaster Telecaster
Gibson Les Paul:
Designed by the Gibson Guitar Corporation in 1950 with Les Paul acting as their consultant. Apart from shaping and body design a Gibson Les Paul is characterised with strings that are always mounted above the guitar body as opposed to through the body as with the Fender designs. The Les Paul has many classic colours including ebony, classic white, wine red, alpine white and fire burst. It was also cutting edge, introducing the humbucker, which revolutionised the sound of the electric guitar.
Stratocaster:
Designed by Leo Fender, Freddie Tavares and George Fullerton in 1954 the Stratocaster or "strat" is one of the most popular electric guitars in production. Typically, Stratocaster electric guitars have a solid body made of ash, alder or poplar wood with a bolt on neck piece. The body will have areas cut out either side of the neck to give the classic double cut-away appearance. The body will have a tremelo (whammy bar) with 2 or 3 single coil pickups. The neck is often made of maple with the fretboard made using maplewood, rosewood, pau ferror or ebony wood. The neck will have 21 vintage frets or 22 jumbo frets on the higher end contemporary models.
Telecaster:
The telecaster was developed by Leo Fender in 1949 and is sometimes known as the Tele. The Telecaster has a solid body with bolt on neck and was designed for the mass production market. This electric guitar became popular from 1950 when the single and double pick-up Esquire models were sold. Similarly to the Stratocaster the body is made of ash, alder or poplar wood with a maple neck and maple/rosewood fretboard.
