"FMIC bought Fender from CBS in late March/early April of 1985. Not many guitars were made in 1985 by CBS/Fender; from what I've read CBS knew they were going to sell the company and production really wound down in say February of 1985; just some final assembly to get rid of parts already produced on hand in March and by FMIC in April. FMIC just got the intellectual property; the factory wasn't part of the deal. CBS sold the factory equipemt separately and then sold off the real estate.
FMIC origianlly was just going to have guitars produced overseas, but some of the new ownership team convinced the company they should continue to have American-made Fenders, so they started building the Corona factory. The Corona factory was up and running in 1986; FMIC started with limited production of the reissue models in mid-summer and added production of the American Standard models by late fall of 1986. While the American Standards didn't officially debute until January of 1987, they started production of them circa October/November 1986. I have also read that they didn't release any USA Reissues until the guitars coming off the line were better than the MIJ Reissues they were importing, so I'm not sure when the USA Reissues really came back out. They were certainly out again by January 1987.
In that interim (April 1985 until say July 1986), there were only MIJ guitars - both reissues and the "Contemporary" models.
I also agree with you about the pricing of the CBS/Fender Fullerton Reissues - nice guitars but a lot of hype pushing up the price. I guess dealers are latching on to these as the next "collectables" from that 1982-1984 era. The prices on the 1982 "Smith Strats" have gone up a bit, now the early reissues are going up. Outside of the "bowling ball" finish 1984 Strats/Teles I don't see the 2-knob Strats or Strat Elites reaching these prices; the "collectable market" seems to have passed them by and is going for the first-year American Standards from 1986/87."
